When you start making sales, you'll need to have an infrastructure to fulfill those orders. You have to be able to pack and ship those orders, which means you'll need shipping supplies. You'll have to have someone to transport and deliver the package, which means you'll need a shipping account or accounts. You'll also need a way of keeping track of the incoming and outgoing money, and a way to keep track of orders. These are the parts of the business we call The Backend.
|
The Backend is the behind the scenes activity that is the heart and soul of your business. Your backend setup does not need to be pretty, but it must be functional. It's important that you set it up correctly right from the start so that you don't have to change it later.
When setting up your backend, think about each step and constantly ask yourself if what you are doing now to ship one order will work when you are shipping 20 or 50 orders. |

Order Processing
The basic process after verifying an order is legitimate, is to print an invoice or packing slip, gather the items to be shipped in the order, pack them securely in a box or envelope with the packing slip, obtain the weight of the package, print a shipping label, and either bring the package to a shipper, or have somewhere for when the shipper picks it up. Then you should contact the customer to let them know the order has shipped, and provide tracking information for them. |
