Analytics

Analytics is the process of keeping track of who’s visiting your website.  Many web hosts provide free or low cost basic statistics to help you see who’s visiting your site and from where.  Other companies offer products to give you an in depth view of what people are doing when they visit your website.  They can tell you what pages they went to, how long they stayed on each page, where they came to your site from, how they found your site, what operating system and browser they were using when they visited your site, and much more.

These tools will also tell you what pages on your site most people enter your site on, known as landing pages, and what pages people leave your site from, known as exit pages.  This information is valuable because if you have loads of visitors to your site, but little sales, you can track down where people are leaving your site from, and that can help you figure out why they are leaving.  This type of information can also help you determine if a change you made to the site is having a positive or negative effect and also help you determine your conversion rate.

Another useful feature of analytics is the ability to see where people who are visiting your website are located, right down to the city they are in.  This can help you determine if you are getting your message across if you are advertising locally or internationally.

Google offers a free analytics tool called, appropriately, Google Analytics.  You can also purchase tools or services from others that will keep track of a variety of information to get an inside view of what’s happening with your website.
