Electronic Commerce 101 - Your guide to getting started in E-Commerce

The Website

When selling online, your website is your store. This is where people will come to shop. Their experience on your website is an extension of what they will think about your business. That's why we are dedicating an entire section to it.

Product Descriptions

Online there won't be a sales person to approach your potential customer and answer questions or make the sale. Each web page should provide all the information the customer will need to make the determination to buy that product. At the same time they should also present the product in a way to encourage the customer to buy using positive calls to action. If possible, when making the descriptions for your products, try to avoid using all the same text the manufacturer uses, and probably the same text most of your competitors will be using. While cutting and pasting the product description from the manufacturer's website is easy, it won't make your website stand out in customer's minds or in the search engines.

Site Development

There are two ways to create your website. You can hire someone to make it for you, or you can do it yourself. Some hosting companies will even provide a free or low cost shopping cart solution with a hosting plan. The level of difficulty in setting up the shopping cart depends on which software you use.

There are also a lot of companies that will design or build your website for you. Pricing will vary based on what your needs are. Cost for those services with be based on the complexity of your website and who you use to build it for you.

If you choose to build your website yourself, it's easier than you think if you have computer experience. An online store can be built using only the shopping cart software, or using regular webpages, or a combination of the two. The most popular software for making websites are Adobe Dreamweaver, followed by Microsoft Front Page. Many websites even offer free or low cost templates that lay out the format of the website for you, and all you have to do is customize it a little to make it your own.
